GASACT WA has had a busy year with the inaugral social meet and greet event at the Aviary held in July, the annual GASACT movie night held in November, and the Part 3 course planned for the 15th of December. I would like to thank the ASA, and our sponsors MDA National and Investec for their continued support.

As we come towards the end of the year, the job situation in Victoria is very limited for new fellows. We would still welcome new fellows looking for work to contact the Victorian Committee of the ASA if they can assist at this time. The Part 3 course was completed recently, to provide some useful information into starting life as a consultant, particularly outside public hospital jobs.

December sees a changing of the guard for GASACT in Queensland. Senior Representative Dr Jeremy Brammer heads over to the UK to complete a fellowship year whilst Junior Representative Dr Josh Daly is heading off to complete a pain fellowship in 2013.

South Australian and Northern Territory trainees have enjoyed a busy calendar of events recently, with the Annual Trainee Dinner, ANZCA/ASA CME day “The Failing Organ” and our Part 3 Course all taking place in the last three months. Thanks to all those who organized and participated, making these events a great success.

The irony of writing an article on time-management on the morning said article is due is not lost on me. Which is a feat in itself, because I’m currently ‘enjoying’ my last night shift and am sitting in The Canberra Hospital’s anaesthetic department in a state of bleary-eyed delirium.

The ACT ASA held the inaugural registrar prize evening on Friday 30th November. Congratulations to Dr Dinuk Jayamanne who was the recipient of the prize amongst stiff competition. Thank you to all who presented and set a high standard for coming years. We would also like to thank the ASA for sponsoring the prize and everyone who supported the event.

Dr Melissa Haque – Junior GASACT Representative WA

My youngest brother started his first grown-up job this year as a first year Law graduate in Perth. Despite being very proud of his imminent employment, as an elder sibling I felt it was essential to prepare him for the lifestyle change ahead by helpfully sharing stories from my lawyer friends who were transformed from normal, well-balanced people into workaholic robots upon commencing their first year of practicing. Fast-forward to 3 months into the job and it is rare to see him home before 9pm. The transformation is complete.
