Come and help us to take Malawian anaesthesia to the next level.
Malawi is a beautiful, small, very poor, and interesting country in south-east Africa, which earns its name" the warm heart of Africa" to the fullest extent.
Senior trainees and specialists wanted to join the vibrant department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the University of Malawi. Our department serves Queen Elisabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, which is the biggest hospital in Malawi, with 7 - 8 theatres and a 4-5 bed (P) ICU.
The spectrum includes operations for oesophageal atresia in babies with 2,0 kg, 1600 Caesarean Sections a year, transthoracic spine surgery in children and prostatectomies in the elderly as well as percutaneous dilatation tracheotomy, peritoneal dialysis , CVVH or cerebral malaria, malnutrition, Schistosomiasis, Aids and Tuberculosis. Besides our clinical work we teach the medical students, the anaesthetic clinical officers and the nurses.
Because there is not a single Malawian specialist working in Anaesthesia in the country our main task is to introduce in 2008, the first ever, four year specialization programme for anaesthesia (MMED) in Malawi. This is the only way to bring sustainability on a high level to the countries anaesthesia. For on the ground and advanced training we need your support.
That means: there is a lot of work and teaching waiting for any enthusiastic anaesthesiologist or intensive care specialist who is interested in bringing really good patient care to countries without great financial reward!
We offer badly paid (one year onwards) and volunteer posts (less than one year) with a lot of work, incredible experiences, real African life and the chance to develop a new perspective for your private view on medicine and life - join us.
